What Are The Chances Your Luggage Will Be Lost Or Something Will Be Stolen Out Of It?

I’m getting paranoid, because I have a very girly, expensive looking luggage and I’m afraid it’ll be a target to a thief. I’m going to California from Alaska and I have one stop at Seattle.
I will be using TSA approved luggage locks.
Have you ever lost your luggage or got anything stolen from it?
What can I do to prevent this or protect myself in case my luggage gets lost/stolen?

In 20+ years of travel, I have never had my luggage lost or stolen. The worst that has happened to me is damage to some of my stuff (usually souvenirs) when security rifles through my belongings. They often leave a nice form letter for my trouble at least.
The best thing to do is not to pack anything of high value in your checked luggage. Downplay your luggage. Cheap bags often last as long as expensive designer bags and they will make your stuff a less promising target to someone looking for a quick and easy mark in sea of bags. Just make sure to put some distinctive colors, tags, or markings on your bags to help you locate them quickly.

I agree with Paul S. Just one thing to add, is that travel laws may have changed somewhat since 9/11 and some airlines recommend NOT locking your luggage (or security people have the right to break open the locks).
If I’m travelling within a country such as the US or Canada (where I’m from), it’s not as likely that your belongings will be stolen.
In any case, dont pack anything irreplaceable or very valuable in your luggage.

STOLEN IS A VERY LOWER PRECENT BUT LOST LUGGAGE IS A 10/100 PRECENT CHANCE
I TRAVEL ALOT SO I KNOW THE AIRPORT HAS LOST MY LUGGAGE ABOUT 1 TIME AND THAT WASD BECAUSE I SWITCHED PLANES AND I DONT THINK IT IS SAFE FOR U TO HAVE LOCKS ON YOUR LUGGAGE THEY MIGHT ASK U TO TAKE IT OFF AND IT MAKES IT SEAM LIKE U HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE OR SOMETHING THAT U DONT WANT OTHERS TO SEE
    {SORRY IT IS SO LONG]

I have travelled from LAX to MCO twice in the last three month and never have any problems. I just use the luggage straps and where the zippers match up I run a wire twist through. It discourages people. Security checks my luggage and nothing has been lost or broken yet.
