What Is The Best Way To Backpack Around Europe (during The High Season)?

I am planning to backpack from Spain/Morocco across the Southern part of Western Europe and into Slovenia, with my stopping point being Croatia. Any tips regarding cheap airfare/lodging/transit would be greatly appreciated. I must go during July – August due to time constraints.

I’m so jealous – you’ll have so much fun! I didn’t that 6 years ago and it was so amazing.
Most importantly, don’t get stuck to a plan. I think it’s best to just make resservations a few days in advance, but this only works if you’re willing to stay in some interesting places. (by interesting, I mean not 4-star). Invest in a good lock/cable for your backpack in case you end up somewhere that isn’t a private room (and for on the train).
As for train travel, I found that it was cheaper to buy ticket-by-ticket than to purchase a eurorail pass that lets you have unlimited travel. Also, it’s nice to travel at night – less wasted time and one less night to find someplace to stay (pay extra for a bed on the train – it’s worth it).
Try to make it to Prague – it’s a wonderful city.
An important tip . . . many europeans speak English, but don’t assume. Ask first – it’s just polite and they’ll be more helpful than if you just start speaking to them in English.
    Good luck and have fun!!!

If you are going in summer, consider taking a tent and sleep in the countryside. Saves money on accomodation and you get to see more than just the cities.
