I’m from the United States and I think I want to take a semester off from school to backpack through Ireland. Where are the cheapest places I can stay? How large of a pack should I bring? How should I carry my money? I also read that I can stay for three months with just a passport, if I wanted to stay longer and possibly work there a little do I have to get a Visa, and if so how can I get one? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve answered the other question, but regarding money: check with your bank before you go, you might be able to use your ATM card in the machines in Ireland, rather than going around with lots of cash. You would need to tell your bank and your credit card company that you are travelling anyway, in case they think someone has stolen your card and is trying to use it in Ireland.
As much as you can get your hands on its really expensive here and the best way is probably putting it on your credit card and then withdrawing it when you get here

- cheapest places to stay in Ireland are hostels(but they usually have 2 person rooms, so you might have to share… or dorms, with several people sharing) OR B&Bs ( bed and breakfast – i don’t think you have them in America, it’s just a large house, and the owner lets out rooms, so you get a bed, and breakfast made you , hence the name, some are cheap, and can be very nice places to stay)
- well you should bring a pack big enough to carry anything you want to bring… Ireland doesn’t really have any special requirements..
- how should you carry your money… well Ireland, like anywhere else, has some safe places, and some not so safe places…. you should carry some cash, as it can be hard to find an ATM in some rural areas of Ireland… but not so much that you would be stranded if you were robbed. everywhere will take a visa…. you can probably find out the places to avoid on any tourist website… if you can’t you can message and ask me…
-yes, to do any work at all you need a visa, and 3 months is the typical limit on a stay… but i think there is some form of J1 (J1 is a well known form Irish students can get to stay in America for a gap year and work if they wish) but i’m not sure. you can apply for a visa… but i don’t know the procedure in America.. perhaps ask your travel agent?
- other advise? erm can’t think of anything… but feel free to message me if you have any more questions…i’d be glad to help
