Do not use bleach, it weakens the fabric and backpacks have to be tough, plus with the coloring, it could cause the colour to run. Pour a small amount of liquid detergent onto heavily stained areas, rub into the area, an old toothbrush works great for this, if not, just rub the fabric together. Let set for 20 minutes, then wash in cold on delicate cycle, hang to dry.

Wash it cold and the colors shouldn’t run, and use Oxy-Clean or something to that effect. It’s safe for fabrics such as backpacks, outdoor seat cushions, canvas, etc. and will bleach out the dirt without hurting the color. If you still don’t want to submerge it, hand wash it in the sink with a white cloth. Dry cool or air dry, then put in the dryer for just a few minutes

Cold water, 1/4 cup detergent, easiest cycle your machine has and 1/4 cup bleach Hang dry
If it is just surface dirt eliminate the bleach. If there are obvious taco stains or pepsi stains then use it.
