If you are moving, check into shipping as much as you can. After you exceed the maximum weight limit you will be charged an over weight fee per kg. If you are using crates or containers other than suit cases, make sure they are not oversized. Check the airlines dimension requirements, they are pretty standard for every destination. Depending on how heavy and how many extra pieces you have, you can end up paying more than the cost to ship the items twice.
When I was a ticket agent I had to charge a lady $400 US for having 2 extra bags. All 4 of her pieces were severely over weight and she was flying to S. Africa.
Most airlines have a 2 piece carry on policy, and a few have only a 1 piece carry on policy. These items must fit in the over head bin or under the seat in front of you and should weigh no more than 18kg.
Once you get everything packed if you have a way of weighing your luggage, do so then call the airline and get an estimated charge for overweight fee’s. You can also take them up to the airport, preferably at an off peak hour, and weigh them and an agent can tell you how much to expect to pay. That is if you are close to the airport you are flying out of.
You can also check with local cargo companies or the airlines to get prices for shipping the items as cargo rather than checked baggage. Since you will be having to clear the items in customs it is best to find a freight forwarder or customs broker. DHL, FedEX both provide these services. Consolidate what every can, get rid of what you dont need. If you can keep all of your luggage at the 20kg limit and just pack 3 or 4 bags, it may be cheaper than over packing any of the other bags.
from London Heathrow to Cape Town International South Africa the weight allowed would be 20 kg. If you are traveling to North America, weight allowed would be 2 pieces of luggage of 70 lbs(32 kg) each.
Lots I think. I recently went to Jamaica and was AMAZED at what people brought. Tires, refrigerators, huge boxes of everything, etc. Check with the airline.
It will almost definitely be cheaper to ship your items – with the cost of fuel, air carriers are cutting the amount you can check/carry on & charging more for overweight baggage. Check w/the carrier for their luggage policy – they almost all have websites.
it doesn’t matter were i am going, if I cant fit in in a carry on its not going.
Call the airlines that you are using. They may each have different prices and policies…while you are at it check on maximum allowed dimensions. Then compare their prices to someone like DHL, or FedEx. You might be better off shipping with them–and far less likely to have your luggage lost. If at all possible it is always to limit yourself to carry on.
I fly between US and the UK and it is 20kg…..I once was a little overweight and they wanted to charge me the price of another ticket.
