    Hi Andrea
That’s quite correct, different airlines do have different weights allowances.
I don’t know whether you’ve been on the Alitalia site; have a look at this linkhttp://www.alitalia.com/GB_EN/your_trave…
which outlines checked in baggage allowances to and from the USA. It looks from this as though you will be allowed 2 suitcases per adult, each with a maximum allowance of 23 kilos in economy class.
You then also have one piece of hand luggage each – see this link :http://www.alitalia.com/GB_EN/your_trave…
    - which must not exceed 5 kilos.
Do bear in mind that Europe still has very strict rules about transporting liquids. You can put any amount in your checked-in baggage but in your hand luggage you will only be allowed bottles of no more than 100ml. That includes things like make-up and creams. This page http://www.alitalia.com/GB_EN/your_trave…
will give you a list of everything considered to be a liquid.
All your bottles must fit into one bag (per person) which must be clear plastic and also has strict dimensions (which are listed on the page above).
I can personally vouch for the fact that these liquid regulations are very strictly adhered to in Italy when you’re leaving the country – they have enormous collection boxes at security and if you are carrying anything in your hand luggage which does not fit the regulations you will have to leave it there.
If you’re still concerned my advice would be to ring Alitalia and check, or if you’ve booked through a travel agent ask them t do it and to give you the information in writing.
I hope this helps and I hope you have a fabulous time in Italy.
