I am taking a backpack, and a suit bag as carry-on luggage for a U.S. Domestic flight will this be alright of will i have to check one on them? Also with I be alright with stick deodorant (not the powder type)?

December 15th, 2009 Luggage Boy i am going to hawaii in may and traveling with my son who will be 18 months at the time.
we are planning on gate checking his car seat and stroller, but i was just wondering if gate checking items count as carry on items, or is it still considered checked luggage even though you didnt check it at the registration counter?
thanks to anyone who give helpful answers. this is our first time traveling with a child, and we are not sure how it all works.
