Can You Take Free Weight Dumbbells On A Carry-on Luggage?

I’m traveling back to school this week, and want to take one of my dumbbells (5 lb) from home. I would just order it at school, but the shipping on those things are ridiculous.
Is this allowed by TSA in the carry on luggage? Has anyone tried it? I looked over all the airline information online, but it doesn’t say anything about it being prohibited.
